The economy has been recurrently at the center of attention for the Portuguese political elite over the last two hundred and fifty years.

The designations have varied. But since the mid-18th century, there has been a concern to bring the country up to par with the "most polished nations of Europe."

The notion of disparity and the idea of ​​finding ways to overcome it have traversed different contexts and conjunctures, almost always associated with a perception of material scarcity. This dimension ended up being an essential part of political projects and even regime changes.

The reading public and scholars of society and politics cannot do without economic indicators for a more comprehensive historical analysis.

The territories of the "economic process" have their own methodologies and conceptualizations, but these should not prevent their results from being communicated and appropriated for discussion and analysis in the public sphere.

This is the primary objective of this collection, which aims to combine readability with rigor in the study of Contemporary Portuguese History.
