Doctor Zhivago is the great epic and marvelous saga of Russia in the first half of the 20th century, narrated through the unforgettable story of the life and loves of a poet, philosopher, and doctor during the turbulent days of the revolution. Yuri Andreyevich Zhivago decides to take his family from Moscow to the Ural Mountains, hoping to find greater safety there, but ends up not only in the center of the battle between the White and Red fronts but also torn between his home and his boundless love for the beautiful nurse Lara.
This novel, considered the greatest of post-revolutionary Russia, was originally published in 1957, a year before its author was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, but, banned by the censorship of the Communist Party, it would have to wait thirty years to be read in Pasternak's country.
The work was adapted for film in 1966 by director David Lean, with actor Omar Sharif in the lead role. This edition features a translation by António Pescada made directly from the Russian.
