It's midnight, Bela Lugosi's Dead by Nouvelle Vague is playing in the background, and not even the music prevents me from thinking about that "barbaric, brutal, mute, meaningless reality of things" that Ortega spoke of. I look out the window and see life inert, and it seems to me that this kind of barbaric and mute reality is especially perceived today by those who - as Musil already thought - believe that the inherent simplicity of narrative order no longer exists in the world, that simple order that consists of being able to say sometimes: "After that happened, this happened, and then something else happened, et cetera."
We are reassured by the simple sequence, the illusory succession of events.
