A famous FC Porto football player is murdered in an Irish bar in the heart of Foz. For Jaime Ramos, an inspector with the Porto Judicial Police, and Filipe Castanheira, who interrupts a self-imposed exile in the Azores, several people are implicated in the crime: Alexandra, the victim's wife; Susana, married to another football player and the deceased's lover; Serafim, the lover of the lover; and other more or less shadowy figures who evoke the obscure relationships of the football world.

As the investigations unfold, the many passions that bind all the characters emerge; Jaime Ramos and Filipe Castanheira's passion for food; Jorge Alonso, the owner of the Irish bar, for Ireland; and almost everyone else's passion for football; the supposed driving force of the book. It is these passions that ultimately give meaning to the meaninglessness of life.
