"The Phantom of the Opera" is a French novel written by Gaston Leroux and originally published serially in the famous literary magazine "Le Gallois" between September 23, 1909, and January 8, 1910, and later published as a book in April 1910. The novel is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the 19th century and by an apocryphal tale concerning the discovery of a dancer's skeleton during the production of Carl Maria von Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" in 1841.

One of the most famous horror and love stories of the 20th century, "The Phantom of the Opera" combines romance and suspense to narrate the love triangle between the beautiful and talented opera singer Christine Daaé, the fragile and passionate Viscount Raoul de Chagny, and the sinister and obsessed musical genius who inhabits the cellars of the theater.

Presented as a true investigation, the novel introduces a multitude of characters who serve to attest to the existence of the terrifying inhabitant of the Paris Opera's underground. With the contours of a historical account, the narrative leads the reader through the labyrinths of the Paris Opera and the human heart, revealing the darkest aspects of both. It's almost impossible to read "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" without being overcome by a conflict of feelings. Starting with the figure of the Phantom himself. What does he inspire in us: fear or compassion? And here it's important to go beyond the obvious deformity of the protagonist's face and soul. If we focus only on this scar, without seeing the beauty it conceals, we will miss precisely the contrasts that make this character so strong, and his story simultaneously tragic, frightening, and moving.

The Phantom is a terrifying, yet captivating character. What terrifying secret lies hidden in the underground of the Paris Opera? What mystery haunts one of the most majestic palaces dedicated to art in the French capital? “THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA” has been adapted countless times for the screen, theater, musicals, and television series. Among the most famous adaptations of this classic of French literature are the film productions starring Lon Chaney in 1925; the 1943 version starring Claude Rains, Susanna Foster, and Nelson Eddy; and the most recent, from 2004, starring Gerard Butler, Miranda Richardson, Ciarán Hinds, and Simon Callow, based on the 1986 musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
