Published in 1854, this pioneering book of self-discovery recounts Thoreau's two-year experience of isolation at Walden Pond (Massachusetts, USA) and includes references to themes such as mythology, history, poetry, carpentry, fauna, and flora. Above all, it presents the author's ideas on the best way to live a simple life, in harmony with the surrounding and therefore external Nature, but especially with our own intrinsic human nature. This book is considered as revolutionary and anti-capitalist as Marx and Engels' Manifesto, although here the answer depends more on individual actions, on our inner transformation, than on popular mobilization.
