Galilee, final years of the reign of Herod the Great. A few weeks after being given to her fiancé, the Virgin is taken to Jericho and into the presence of the king. When she is returned to Joseph, her fiancé, Mary is pregnant. Coerced by an official order, Joseph ends up marrying Mary.
After Joseph's death, Herod's edict reappears. It is upon this document that Mary's son will seek to rebuild, first, his identity and then his own life.
Hostage to his status as the bastard son of a dead king, Mary's son begins a drift towards the margins of society. While traversing the symbolic places of power of the Herodian dynasty, he finds in John the Baptist a mentor who impels him to reclaim what, by blood, belongs to him.
The subversion of biblical references finds an echo in the premises left open by the biblical text itself, creating a disturbing fiction that directly challenges the reader's convictions.
