John Milton - Paraíso Perdido (Bilingue)
28.90€
One of the fundamental works of universal literature in a new edition with a translation by Daniel Jonas and illustrations by Gustave Doré.
"This is an electrifying poem about Love and War, the struggle between Good and Evil, and an obsession with the idea of human Freedom that is very relevant to our times." Armando Iannucci
Originally published in 1667, John Milton's epic poem recounts the fall of Man: the temptation of Eve and Adam, as well as the consequent expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton is believed to have written the poem throughout his life, having interrupted his work due to the English Civil War, the premature death of his second wife, and various bouts of illness (including blindness in 1652). In reality, Milton himself was surprised by the path his writing took when composing this biblical epic, since he had intended to compose a more traditional epic about kings and knights. Milton is believed to have completed the poem in 1663 and begun a long revision process – since 1652 he had been working with the help of scribes and friends who read and noted his suggestions, corrections, and revisions. The text, composed in blank verse, something unusual for an epic, became one of the most influential works of Western culture.
This bilingual edition combines Daniel Jonas's translation with Gustave Doré's complete engravings in a first-ever edition in Portugal.
