Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the publication of Sonnets to Orpheus (1923), this publication also presents the mysterious cycle Poems at Night (1913-16). While the former is undeniably one of Rainer Maria Rilke's greatest works, written as a memorial to the recently deceased dancer Wera Knoop during the author's famous stay at Muzot Castle, the latter reveals in clear strokes how central the noun "night" is to Rilke's poetry: after "life," it is the most frequent word in his vocabulary. A cycle of poems written as a balance, a sketch, a preparation for the author's two great works: The Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus.
