In the industrial area, night approaches with a warm breeze, the clouds are pink wisps on the horizon. You hear the seagulls. You want to get away from them. Better to go to the restaurant area, where people pass by. But you see a car in the distance and cross the street, gesticulating wildly.
The car stops sideways at the foot of the trash cans, with one of the wheels on the sidewalk. A man in a suit gets out, holding a red leather briefcase. He slams the door shut. With a grumpy face, he pretends not to see you. But you like to outsmart these sly ones. In everything in life, you have to put on a show, you have to be smooth-talking. It's not just about showing up and asking. It's about showing up and dazzling, your mother taught you, before running away to Brazil with her boyfriend.
