An anthology of short stories by classic Russian authors revolving around the unusual, the unconventional, and the supernatural.
An Empire, a country of immense size, which is also an agglomeration of cultures that are not always understood in the best way, must be governed, in its various incarnations, with an iron fist to prevent it from shattering. Thus, it is perfectly natural that on the side of those who defend the whole there is a fear of a lack of unity, and, on the opposite side, a fear of the abuse of power.
The fantastic short story has always served precisely to, in a way that generally escapes censorship, put its finger on the wound. Thus, the stories gathered in this anthology – 17 texts, almost all unpublished in Portuguese and translated directly from Russian – also cover almost 100 years of Russian literature and reality, conveying to readers how writers experienced the fears of a society under two different regimes and in the always uncertain moments of transition.
Much more than an anthology of short stories, we are faced with a portrait of changing realities, where fears and insecurities define and, in many cases, decide human actions.
Authors such as Tolstoy, Andreyev, and Chekhov are joined by great names in Russian short stories, though less known among us, revealing the vastness of one of the world's most important literatures.
