Godspeed You Black Emperor! – Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

The second studio album by Canadian collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor is an essential post-rock landmark, combining expansive instrumental compositions, orchestral arrangements, layered guitars, strings, percussion and field recordings.

Across four lengthy pieces, the music gradually shifts between delicate, contemplative passages, shadowy atmospheres and powerful crescendos of remarkable emotional intensity. Spoken-word samples and sounds captured from everyday life add a cinematic, evocative quality, while the constantly evolving dynamics create an immersive listening experience shaped by tension, melancholy and unexpected moments of light. Highlights include “Storm”, with its gradual and expansive build-up, the introspective atmosphere of “Sleep”, and “Static”, which moves between ambient textures and towering waves of sound. An essential release for listeners drawn to atmospheric post-rock, ambitious instrumental compositions and music that places sonic storytelling and emotional depth at its heart.
