Sunn O))) — Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson — have spent nearly three decades expanding the possibilities of heavy music, operating at the intersection of the avant-garde and rock while forging a language entirely their own. Their tenth album, Sunn O))), marks a decisive new chapter and their debut release for Sub Pop.

Recorded at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington, with producer Brad Wood, the album is deeply shaped by its surroundings. The studio’s vast rooms and forested setting informed a slower, more spacious approach, allowing the duo to work with an acute sense of atmosphere, duration and physical presence. For the first time in years, O’Malley and Anderson focus entirely on the core duo format, performing all instrumentation themselves and uncovering fresh intensity in that stripped-back configuration. The music is expansive yet precise: tectonic guitar mass and howling feedback give way to unexpectedly fragile details, from subtle piano figures to natural field recordings that seep beneath the surface. These contrasts lend the album a sense of motion and breath, echoing the rugged landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The record is framed by paintings from the late American artist Mark Rothko, with liner notes by British writer Robert Macfarlane, bringing sound, image and text into dialogue. Sunn O))) stands as a concentrated statement of purpose — elemental, physical and unmistakably Sunn O))).
