Tricky - Different When It's Silent (indies)

Tricky presents Different When It’s Silent, a focused set that revisits the stark, hybrid sound he’s explored since Maxinquaye. Recorded between France and Bristol, it draws on close collaborators old and new, grounding the record in the musical community that shaped him.

Lead track ‘Out Of Place’, premiered by Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6 Music, pairs longtime collaborator Marta’s restrained vocal with Tricky’s more urgent delivery, creating a tense, minimal finale. Elsewhere, Bristol singer Mitch Sanders’ falsetto threads through the record, adding warmth to its lean framework.

Across fourteen tracks, Tricky blends skeletal blues, brooding electronics, distorted guitars and stripped-back hip-hop rhythms. It’s a direct, uncluttered collection that moves fluidly between styles while maintaining the exploratory approach that has defined his work for decades.
