Using only primary sources – texts and documents written by people who lived at the time of the events described – Gibbon compiled one of the most faithful histories ever written. The author follows the trajectory of the Empire from its peak in 98 AD to 1580, more than a century after the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire. In this way, the interrelations between Western civilization and Islamic civilization are described, as well as the Mongol conquests that reached the heart of Europe.
