Oliveira Martins paints a picture of the civil war that tore the country apart following the death of King John VI, a conflict that went down in history better known as the Liberal Wars, which pitted absolutists (the supporters of Dom Miguel) against liberals (the supporters of his brother, Dom Pedro, former emperor of Brazil, who in 1826 proclaimed himself king of Portugal as Dom Pedro IV).

The conflict raged for 6 years, but had consequences that resulted in several more decades of intermittent struggles, coups and counter-coups, with terrible consequences for the country, devastated (in its agriculture and economy), divided and indebted (due to successive loans taken out to finance the kingdom).
In a passionate style, which would be impossible today in a text intended to be historical, Oliveira Martins takes us through all the episodes, culminating in the Regeneration period (1851-1868).
