It is now undeniable that in recent years the European Union has faced a series of challenges, for which the solutions presented are not always consensual.

Based on this premise, the Geographical Society, through its European Commission, and fulfilling one of its meritorious functions – to analyze and debate historical facts of relevance to the country – invited a series of relevant figures from our academic and political circles to present their perspective on the challenges faced by the European Union and to point out possible solutions, through a broad series of conferences. This series was aptly named Europe at the Crossroads.

In addition to the results of these lectures, this volume also includes the speech given by President Emmanuel Macron at the Sorbonne; that of Prime Minister António Costa at the College of Europe in Bruges; as well as the State of the Union address by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker; and also the White Paper on the Future of Europe, an effort by the European Commission to discuss the current and future state of the European Union.

In short, this volume of essays is an essential contribution to understanding the challenges facing the European project.
