“Trying to write the history of the medieval Douro in our time is almost as difficult as it was to navigate that river five hundred years ago. The choices are many, and it is advisable to begin the journey with a full awareness of what awaits us. Documentation is scarce: experienced researchers usually begin by directing their research towards large cities (even better if they were bishoprics) and religious establishments. In our case, the possibilities seemed interesting: the archbishopric of Braga covered practically the entire Trás-os-Montes region, and the wealth of that institution is well known; we obviously have the bishopric of Lamego and, to a certain extent, that of Viseu. And we have, of course, Porto city and Porto bishopric.
