"The Labors of Persiles and Sigismunda," considered by Cervantes to be his best work, had long been foreshadowed in earlier books, such as Don Quixote. Published a year after his death, this text narrates the long journey of two Nordic princes in love who pretend to be siblings. Crossing seas populated with islands, from Northern Europe to Lisbon, they venture on a pilgrimage to Rome, following the overland routes of the South. The many main and secondary characters who accompany them through adversity and fortune tell their past labors.
