Nine hundred years ago, in 1109, the courageous Afonso Henriques was born. While still young, he was knighted, fought against his mother, and opposed his cousin, the Emperor of Hispania. As a conqueror, he waged battles, captured cities, defeated the Almoravid kings, and formed the Kingdom of Portugal. It was through betrayal that he was defeated. As a man, he had a lonely childhood, passionate affairs, a marriage of convenience, and faced a maternal curse. Ignored by the Pope, it was the people themselves who acclaimed him King.
