Fat Freddy’s Drop’s Based On A True Story is a defining debut, fusing dub, soul and future funk with the group’s loose, exploratory approach. First released in 2005, it quickly made an impact, topping the charts in Aotearoa and earning multiple awards, while going on to become the country’s longest-charting album.

Across ten tracks, the band shift between deep grooves and playful detours, mixing new material with reworked versions of earlier cuts including ‘This Room’, ‘Hope’ and ‘Ernie (Willow Tree)’, alongside ‘Flashback’. The result is a fluid, full-bodied set that captures their live energy in recorded form.

Celebrated both at home and internationally, the album picked up major honours including recognition from Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards in the UK.
