The Sophs - Goldstar (coloured)
27.00€
Los Angeles six-piece The Sophs first drew attention by cold-emailing demos to Rough Trade before they had even played a show.
That bold introduction set the tone for GOLDSTAR, a debut album driven by brutal honesty, intrusive thoughts and an unfiltered appetite for stylistic risk. Built through the collaboration of six musicians with wildly different instincts, the record moves freely between pop-punk bite, funk elasticity, talk-sung confessionals and sudden left turns that keep the listener off balance. Ramon’s voice sits at the centre of the album, rich, flexible and chameleonic, anchoring songs that refuse to settle into a single mode for long, with versatility emerging not as a goal but as a natural outcome. The band approach songwriting as a form of pop art, borrowing and reframing familiar shapes until meaning begins to fracture. Lyrically, GOLDSTAR circles questions of morality, recognition and performative goodness, asking who is rewarded, why, and whether approval is ever earned for the right reasons. The title track opens with delicate fingerpicking before unfolding into a broader philosophical provocation. Tension and release define the album’s emotional core, with moments of restraint giving way to total collapse, capturing the group at their most alive. What emerges is a record that is volatile, witty, confrontational and unexpectedly joyful, fuelled by the chemistry of six musicians pushing each other to the edge.
