Published in 1967, The Society of the Spectacle is Guy Debord’s most famous philosophical and political work — a relentless analysis of how modern capitalism has infiltrated every aspect of daily life.

The spectacle, described as “a drug for slaves” that impoverishes the true quality of life, is portrayed by Debord as an inverted image of a desirable society, where relationships between commodities have replaced the bonds between people, giving priority to passive identification over genuine activity. For Debord, “the more [the spectator] accepts recognizing themselves in the dominant images of need, the less they understand their own existence and their own desires.”
