Written in 1920, at the height of the Russian Civil War that followed the 1917 Revolution, Terrorism and Communism remains one of the most powerful and vibrant defenses of the use of force against those who oppose a revolutionary dictatorship, that of the proletariat.

The work emerged as a reply to a text by Karl Kautsky (one of the most celebrated Marxists of the time), The Dictatorship of the Proletariat, in which the author accused the Russian revolutionaries of fomenting civil war and of having distanced themselves from parliamentary democracy, preferring instead to resort to force and extra-parliamentary methods to impose their dictatorship of the proletariat.
In his introduction to this edition, Slavoj Zizek, not shying away from the controversy, states that Trotsky's attack on the illusions of liberal democracy, in his reply to Karl Kautsky, is still relevant today.
